Hidden Treasure At Loch Arkaig

From a blog post entitled "The Jacobite Treasure of Loch Arkaig…:"

"Six caskets...were brought to Loch Arkaig (just north of Fort William) and hidden. Their secret was entrusted to Murray of Broughton, one of the Jacobite fugitives. Murray began the distribution to clan chiefs, but when he was apprehended by the government (and later turned state’s evidence the treasure was entrusted first to Locheil, the chief of Clan Cameron, and then to Macpherson of Cluny, head of Clan Macpherson. Cluny was hiding in a cave at Ben Alder, which came to be known as ‘the cage’, and when Charles briefly joined him there, Cluny had control of the money, which was still hidden at Arkaig."

"If the Highlanders were encouraged by hopes of French assistance, the French treasure stored at Loch Arkaig served a practical purpose in supporting them during a period of irksome inactivity."

"It amounted at first to about 440,000, and Prince Charles seems to have wished to take what remained of it in September with him to France. The proposal was debated at a long Council of War and the clansmen and their Chiefs, as might be expected, disliked the proposal. The gold, therefore, remained in its hiding place at Loch Arkaig."  (Cluny's Treasure) [Source]

Death Of Archibald Cameron

An excerpt reposted from my Detour Through History blog on 21 February 2010:

DEATH OF MR. A. CAMERON
Mr. Archibald Cameron, of L'Ange Gardien, died on Aug. 26, after an illness of only one week, at the ripe age of 90 years and three months. He was born in the County of Lancaster, on May 20, 1808, and removed to Buckingham Township over 65 years ago. During the early part of his life he was engaged largely in the lumber business, but later settled on the farm. For a number of years he was captain of militia in the Ottawa district. Mr. Cameron was a lineal descendant of Sir Ewan Cameron, chief of the Cameron Clan, who was better known as Lochiel. His father, Donald, was born in Argyleshire, and came to Canada in 1802; settling in Lancaster County. In July, 1838, just over 60 years ago, Mr. Archibald Cameron married Miss Nancy McMillan, who at the age of 79 years survives him, though somewhat feeble. Besides his widow he leaves three sons, six daughters, 40 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. One son, Duncan, is a resident of this city being an official member of St. James Methodist Church. Mr. Cameron was a man of integrity and sterling Christian character, and will be much missed by his family. He came of a military family, three of his uncles, Alexander, Duncan, and John Cameron, being British army officers. John Cameron fought in the Irish rebellion, and also in the war of 1812, in Canada, taking part in the battles of Chateauguay, Lundy's Lane, and Queenston Heights. Alex. Cameron fought in the battle of Waterloo, under Wellington, and Duncan in the Irish rebellion. [Obituary courtesy of S. MacMillan]

Hugh Cameron

From Rootsweb:

Flora was six when her mother died and went to live with Mrs. Grant, a cousin, and made a runaway match with Hugh Cameron at the age of 14. She was working in the kitchen one evening when Cameron drove up with a young man, wrapped her in a plaid and took her away and married here - had eight children. Louisa Allan saw  her when she was several years married was a delicate looking woman and Cameron was a large good looking Scotchman. They moved to Port Huron (This is the aunt on the mother, Nancy's, side of John Sandfield Macdonald, note left behind by Sandfield's daughter Josephine. Hugh was the son of John and Mary Cameron of Cornwall).
