Notes from conversation with Charlotte Cameron White:

Her dad, John, AKA Phillip, worked in the factories (in Flint) and commuted from Sterling.  He was found slumped over (stroke) dead in a boarding house when Charlotte was 14.  Her mother, Francis, had been previously married and has other children.

Husband Aubrey lived down the street in Sterling and remembers Aunt Annie & Uncle Donald and played with Donald, Jr.

(Charlotte's) Grandma & Grandpa Cameron were cousins from Scotland.  Came to Michigan in covered wagons.  One child may have died enroute.  Remembers her dad being able to speak French a little due to early schooling in French.  Mentioned Earl Keeney in Mapleridge as a relative.  Other Camerons in Standish not related.

Christie Duer Cameron, Widow Of John

Mary Christie provided an affidavit on behalf of her mother, Mrs. Christie Cameron, who applied for a War of 1812 widow's pension based on the service of her late husband, John Cameron.  [Affidavit of Mary Christie of Caledonia, Livingston County, New York, dated 8 September 1855]  Mary also stated that she was 15 years old when her father died [on 29 December 1814 at his house in Johnstown].

Ann Christie, daughter of John and Christie Cameron stated that her mother's maiden name was Duer in her affidavit.  She also named her siblings as Mary Christie and John Cameron, who were older, and Catherine Cameron, Archibald Cameron, Garrett (?) Cameron and Daniel Cameron, who were younger than she.

Relatives Of The Clement Family

Ellen (Johnston) Carpenter was the daughter of Anna Cameron and John Johnston.  Ellen's daughter, Lorraine Carpenter, married Hugh McLeod Clement in September, 1925, in Genesee County, Michigan.  Lorraine and Hugh had two sons, Bruce and Harvey.

The Clements were known among Canadian Loyalists in years past.  Hugh M. Clement was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, to James Harvey Clement (1873-1919) and Marie Coulson in 1904.  James was the son of James and Martha (Willson) Clement.  A bit of James and Martha Clement's history was recorded in a biography* of Mazo de la Roche because of her (Mazo's) relationship with their daughter, Caroline Clement (sister of James Harvey Clement).

 *"She [biographer Heather Kirk] casts Caroline in a dark light: 'Exiled from her extended and immediate families, Clement was an outsider who wanted in. Humiliated by the failures of her father and brother, she was a low-life who wanted up. Like her mother, she was an invisible partner. Like her father, she was an audacious entrepreneur. Caroline Clement was the ingenious person who developed and maintained an amazing writing machine that got her what she wanted.'” [Source]

Hugh and Lorraine (Carpenter) Clement, with sons Bruce and Harvey, were living in Ohio in 1940.  Perhaps Hugh did not reach adulthood unscathed either since his death in 1946 was a suicide.

I don't really know much about my great-uncle, Donald Cameron, except that he married Clara Mainprize and they adopted a son. Donald was the son of Donald & Anna (Cameron) Cameron.

Clara was the daughter of Robert & Martha (Wallace) Mainprize. Robert was the son of William & Sarah (Vermilyea) Mainprize of Hastings, Ontario, Canada. Robert married Martha Wallace in Midland County, Michigan, in 1916.

MCDONNELL -- Adelia McDonnell, 406 W. Eldridge, age 51, died Tuesday, May 25, 1948, at the residence.  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, May 28, 1948, from the Groves & Co. Funeral Home, Saginaw at Fifth Ave.  Death was due to complications after a sudden illness.  She was born in Sterling, Mich., March 7, 1897, and came to Flint 29 years ago from Duluth, Minn.  Surviving are:  Husband, Alexander; son, Thomas Kilpatrick of Kalamazoo; 4 sisters, Mrs. Jessie Dean of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Rachel Brandt of Flint, and Mrs. Inez Hagen and Mrs. Isabel Buxton both of Superior, Wis.; brother, Lawrence McLaughlin of Superior, Wis.; several nieces and nephews.

Who Was Born On May 17, 1929?

Richard N. Powers, the son of Beatrice Cameron and Ralph N. Powers, was born in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, May 17, 1929.  He was my Dad and he would have been 83 years old today.  He died on Father's Day, June 16, 1974, at the age of 45.  Dad was known for his unflappable good humor.

A Flint Journal column written as a tribute, included the following excerpts:

Our world is composed of doers and takers. It's easy to figure where Dick Powers belonged. The Industrial Mutual Association has lost its Most Valuable Player and the Flint area has lost a guy who seemed to have his finger in all the pies. Having his finger in the pies was natural because he made some of 'em.


Dick returned to the Flint area as coach at old Utley High and later at Swartz Creek. Then came a return to college for an advanced degree and stint with the Michigan Department of Public Instruction. He joined the IMA in 1964 in what ranks as one of the best decisions in IMA history.


HIS JOB required mixing with Flint's elite and its sub-standard folk but he was the same Dick Powers with the Motts as with the Nots. However, I always felt that Dick was happiest when his sleeves were rolled up and he was working behind the scenes.

Dick Powers's short career in Flint resembled an iceberg. What showed on the surface was just a fraction of what he really accomplished. In that respect, his loss is Titanic.

DIES HERE SUDDENLY

Mrs. Anna Cameron, 74, of 754 East Dayton Street, died of a heart attack Tuesday night while sitting on the front porch of her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lawrence [sic] Carpenter. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Reigle funeral home. Burial will be in Grace Lawn with the Rev. O. H. Hood* officiating. A Flint resident for the last 25 years, she is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Lawrence [sic] Carpenter, Mrs. Warren Stout, Mrs. Ralph Powers and Mrs. George Bennett of Flint, and Mrs. Paul Schantz of Charlevoix; two sons, Archie Johnston of Canada and Donald of Flint.

Anna Cameron was my great-grandmother; Beatrice Powers (Mrs. Ralph Powers), was my grandmother.

*Rev. O.H. Hood's daughter, Alice, married Anna Cameron's grandson, William Cameron Powers, several years later.

Richard Cameron, a bachelor, died January 14, 1911, in Standish, Arenac County, Michigan.  His obituary, published in the Saginaw News on January 23, 1911, stated that Richard, age 24, leaves a father, mother, brothers (sic?) and sisters.

Catherine Cameron married John McMillan; she died February 1, 1914, in Arenac County, Michigan. 

Anna Jane (Cameron) Pellette died in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, on March 30, 1920, of tuberculosis.

Florence Cameron married John Moffatt and stayed in Canada.

Archibald Douglas (A.D.) Cameron and his wife, Mary Ann (Cameron) Cameron purchased property in Flint, Michigan, in 1918.
