"Captain Cameron  Canadian Regiment has purchased Bart's farm near the head of the Island for 456 pounds cash.  He intends to take up his residence there soon, and I believe your father and family is to pass this year with him. Stonlia [Stronlia?] arrived here just after your departure.  He is gone on the same farm in Carrieau which Paul occupied and to remain there until he has time to look about him."

"I have had an addition to my family of a little boy since your departure.  I need not give you much news as Mrs. Cameron has frequently written to you.  She and Mrs. McMillan join me in affectionate compliments...".

Dear Cousin Letter Of August 3, 1807

Archibald McMillan and family fonds : H-1099 (Image 251):

Montreal 3 August (1807)

 My dear Cousin

I wrote you some time ago on a subject which I was sure would afford you pleasure--this time I am sorry to have to mention something of a different nature - I mean the conduct of *Donald which you would have heard before now by his Brother John with whom I intened to write to you had he not left this unknown to me
John wished to take little Sandy along with him but the Boy himself was averse to it until his month was out in school till he heard from you which I thought was proper and if you desire it I shall be on the lookout...here or in Quebec... .  I would have taken him into my own house when Donald went away but that it would be confirming Donald's creditors in an opinion which they wished and tried to establish that I was connected with him in business--this idea probably Donald wished to convey to them with a ? to get credit--but luckily for me I kept clear of him. Indeed I was always afraid he was doing no good but I never imagined his affairs would turn out quite as bad as they did.  I have no news to communicate to you--I have not heard this year from the highlands....with best respects to you and Mrs. McMillan and your brother and family believe me

My dear Cousin,
affectionately

*Note: May be Donald Cameron

Regarding Captain Donald Cameron

From the Archibald McMillan and family fonds : H-1099 (Image 251 and 252):

Montreal
10th September 1807

My Dear Sir

I had the pleasure of writing to you on the 17th ulto to which please be referred--I am sorry to have to advise at this time that the bill for L 550 (550 pounds) drawn upon Captain Cameron upon which I am indorser was protested for non acceptance in London and will returned here for payment at maturity the provision made for taking it up having been too late and in part defective.  As I wrote to you before I am not likely ultimately to be a sufferer in this transaction but in the first instance I must make provision for retiring it on its return and it's unfortunately in the hands of a person from whom no indulgence? can be expected. This being the case may I beg of you to convert into cash the small shipments I made to you and remit the proceeds after deducting commission and charges--Pray do you think I should send you down two pipes more of the Madira could you get a ready market for them -- The small keg shrub I mentioned to have sent you in a former letter was sent onboard the ship Augustin.

If you should have occasion to ship anything for me hereafter let me beg of you never to employ Starns who has used me ill the last time and before -- The chest drawers was entirely injured and the former article was much embezzled, not content with that the Gentleman was disposed to be impertinent.

There are from 50 to 60 of the settlers intended for the Grand River in this city and its vicinity, the chief part of whom are enrolled in the companies of militia most contiguous to them-. Some of them can neither talk French or English by which they find themselves awkwardly situated and they think they would have a better opportunity of manifesting their zeal and loyality to government should occasion require them in service by being enrolled in one company of with officers of their own number and they have applied to me in order to make their wish be known to his honor the President whose sentiments upon the subject I hope you will learn and let me known.

I hope by this time the tedious business of Granville is about being finished its long delay will I am afraid keep back the ___ this fall yet with usual best wishes believe me.  Dr Sir yours since
John Munro Esq.

Montreal, 4th Jany 1808

I am favoured with your very esteemed letter of 7th Jno and I cannot sufficiently thank you for obliging attention in communicating to me the arrival of the...in Grenada as I was uneasy on account of Mrs. Cameron from whom I expected to hear long before now.  I am glad the Patent for Grenville is in such forwardness.  The account you give of the Wine surprises me a little as in General it gave me satisfaction to those who bought it.... .

Alexander Cameron In Surinam

Archibald McMillan and family fonds : H-1099 (Image 128 and 129)
Letter (transcribed; original can be found before the transcript)

Surinam
30th December 1804

...forwarded to me by my friends in the Virgin Islands...you may have heard of my quitting the Virgin Islands which I did upwards of two years ago for this place...

Mr. Murphy of St. Thomas....

Your cousin Donald Cameron, the son of Captain Cameron Strone, and my brother Arch. arrived here a few weeks ago...

Everything has turned upside down since you left Lochaber..

It is my determination to use every means I can to get my family settled in America they were always very much attached to Clan don...which you mention in your letter, as well as to yours and Glenpeans families...

...I may pay you a visit there sometime in 1806 or perhaps before.

Pray do you know of your cousin Capt. McMillan, you say nothing of him.  I had no accounts of your cousin Arch. for several years, but I believe he is in the Island of Granada.  I beg my best compliments to Mr. McMillan Glenpean and family, and all our acquaintances in your quarter, remember me in the kindest manner to Mrs. McMillan, Miss. Tommy and family...

My dear Arch,
Yours affectionately,
Alexander Cameron
