Death Of Alex Cameron

Old Resident of Essex

Alexander Cameron, one of the most highly esteemed, most widely known and wealthiest men of Essex County, and the senior member of the legal firm of Cameron, Cleary and Sutherland (also a banker)...died Monday morning at his residence, corner of Church and Carlton streets in Toronto in the 65th year of his age.

Deceased was the son of Allan Cameron, a soldier in the 79th Highland regiment, and was born June 22, 1828, while the regiment was stationed in Ireland.

His mother was from Invernesshire, Scotland, and was a remarkably clever woman.

His father came with his family to Canada six years later, and was appointed to an office in the customs service at Amherstburg.

Mr. Cameron taught school...he went to Upper Canada College, Toronto...(also studied law)...

He entered the offices of his kinsman, Malcolm C. Cameron...

Mr. Cameron, in his early days, bought large tracts of land in Essex, Kent and Lambton....

...twice married; Medora Buell, a daughter of the late Andrew Buell, Master-in-Chancery, Osgoode Hall, by which union there were three children, A. B. Cameron, of the firm Cameron, Cameron and Crooks, Mrs. G. W. Torrance, of Montreal and Mrs. John Cartwright, of London, England.  In 1876, Mrs. Cameron died, and in 1878 Mr. Cameron married Mrs. Ward, widow of the late Capt. E. B. Ward, of Detroit, the marriage of whose daughter to the late Prince de Caramon Chimay, of Belgium was an event... .

The father of deceased died at Amherstburg, as also did Mrs. Cameron, and a brother, Angus, and a sister Margaret.  They are all buried in the Amherstburg cemetery, the last named dying less than two years ago.

Remains laid to rest in St. James Cemetery.  The chief mourners were Alfred B. Cameron, a son, Thomas R. Lyon, of Chicago, a son-in-law, and George Torrance, another son-in-law.  Among the floral tributes were an orchid wreath from Mrs. Cameron...Miss Katie Torrance... .

Death's Doings

From The Windsor Evening Record, 18 July 1902:

Mr. George Bartlet received a despatch this morning from his partner, Mr. Colin Macdonald, who is now in London, telling him of the death of Donald Cameron, Jr., at that place.  the deceased was a nephew and adopted son of Mr. Donald Cameron, a former well-known merchant of this city.

Interment was at Bridge of Allan, Scotland, the present address of Mr. Donald Cameron.

Mr. Macdonald states that he died of Gold Coast fever.  His occupation of mining engineer took him late various parts of Africa, such as South Africa, and the Ivory Coast (French), and no doubt in his journeyings he must have contracted the fever from which he died.

Lt. Cameron Was A Second At Colonel Prince's Duel

Fought a Duel.

The Western Herald of February 14, 1839, refers to the duel which took place between Col. Prince and the Assistant District Treasurer, W. R. Wood. "A hostile meeting took place at an early hour Monday
morning in a field, about two miles back of the town, between Col. Prince and W. R. Wood, Esq. Col. Prince was attended by H. Rudyard, Esq., and Mr. Wood by Lieut. [Allen] Cameron of the Provincial Volunteer Militia. At the first shot Col. Prince's pistol missed fire, Mr. Wood fired without effect; at the second Mr. Wood received the Colonel's ball in his right jaw, and we have been informed, discharged his pistol in the air. The parties then left the ground, the wounded gentleman being conveyed home in Col. Prince's sleigh."  Source

There is a transcribed diary entry by Colonel John Prince describing the duel here.
