Cariboo

Below are excerpts from just a few of the newspapers online that are held at the University of British Columbia Library (Archives):

Article about Hughie Cameron in the Similkameen Star newspaper, published Aug 24, 1901, "Golden Camp McKinney," "History of the Discovery," "The Father of the Camp," "The Cariboo Mine."
-Born at Cape Breton, N.S.

Similkameen Star, published Nov 20, 1907

"Of the 90 who stayed at Cariboo the first winter, seven were women--Mrs. Winnard, Scotch Jennie, afterwards Mrs. Allan...Lizzie Roddie, who married A.D. McLaness, of Fort Alexander, Mrs. Richard Cameron, Mrs. Ben Van Volkenburgh, a Mrs. Donnelly, Mrs. John A. Cameron, wife of Cariboo Cameron, and a French woman."

"Mrs. John A. Cameron died on October 23rd, and Cameron and myself took the body to Victoria, the return trip took 66 days, and for 14 days of which it was more than 40 degrees below zero."

"It was on the 22nd of August, 1862, that Jno. A. Cameron and myself staked the well known Cameron claim on Williams creek, from which about a million dollars was taken.  Yours, truly, Robert Stevenson."

Kootenay Mail, published Apr 28, 1894:
A story about John "Cariboo" Cameron was included.

Peter Cameron's Remorse

Remorse and Laudanam in the Daily Alta California, Volume 81, Number 155, 2 December 1889:
Victoria, B. C, December 1st.— Late last night Peter Cameron, a young machinist living in Nanaimo, committed suicide at the door of a young widow to whom he had been engaged. After the betrothal was broken off Cameron blackened her character by stories he circulated; then regretting his action he tried to effect a reconciliation, but failing in this he swallowed a dose of laudanum and died at her door holding her photograph in his hands.

Name Peter Cameron
Event Type Death
Event Date 30 Nov 1889
Event Place Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Gender Male
Age 38
Birth Year (Estimated) 1851
Birthplace , Scotland

Another newspaper's account (December 2, 1889, Vancouver Daily World, Page 4):

He Loved too Well. An estrangement of lovers was the cause of the sad suicide of Peter Cameron in Victoria on Saturday night from drinking laudanum. Cameron had fallen irrevocably in love with a widow named Mrs. McDonald and they had become engaged, but a quarrel arose. Cameron circulated damaging stories about his former love, but finally repented and sought a reconciliation. Mrs. McDonald would not renew the engagement and Cameron choosing death rather than rejection, took a dose of laudanum at a gateway on Quadra Street from which he was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where be died in two hours.
