Rosella In The Middle

From the Los Angeles Herald, Number 18, 21 November 1914:

MARITAL TRAGEDY CAUSES POLICE TO SEEK BABY GIRL
Loving "daddy” and "muvver” with all her childish heart, pretty, 4-year-old Rosella May Cameron, who, it is said, has played the part of shuttlecock between her estranged parents for some months, today was sought by police detectives who also searched for her mother, Bessie Cameron, and a man named Finley Johnson. Mrs. Cameron and Johnson, who are said by the detectives to have spirited the little girl away, are sought on a complaint issued by the city prosecutor's office. Back of this charge, it is said, a suit for divorce is about to be filed by Harry Cameron against his wife. The troubles of the Camerons, it is said, grew out of a girlhood romance of Mrs. Cameron and Johnson.

Cameron...were married about six years ago, it is said, and they were happy for at least two years. Then trouble came. Johnson, who was said to have been an oldtime sweetheart of Mrs. Cameron’s, according to Cameron, renewed his acquaintanceship with her. Some months ago, unable to agree, the Camerons separated, the wife taking the little girl. She refused, it is said, to allow her husband to see the child. She also brought suit for divorce, but this suit never was tried. Cameron retained Detective Samuel L. Browne and Mrs. Cameron and Johnson were “shadowed,” the detectives say. Detectives attempted to serve divorce papers upon Mrs. Cameron, but she flitted from place to place, eluding service. Then a charge was made on which a warrant was issued and the police are seeking Johnson and Mrs. Cameron, who thus far have managed elude all pursuit.
