Jessie (Cameron) Reid of Michigan

Jessie (Cameron) Reid, the daughter (and 6th child) of Richard and Nancy (Cameron) Cameron, was born on January 9, 1857, in Quebec, Canada. She had 3 older brothers, Donald (my great-grandfather), John A. and Colin as well as 3 younger brothers Ewen, J. R. P. (John Richard Philip) and Richard P. Cameron. Jessie had two older sisters, Jane & Mary Ann, and 2 younger sisters, Joanna and Flora Cameron. Jessie is mention here in her father's Probate papers.

Many members of the Richard Cameron family were living in Bay County, Michigan (later Arenac Co.) when the 1880 census was taken, including Jessie, who was then single and 23 years old.

Jessie Cameron and Thomas Reid were married in Bay Co., MI, on November 4, 1885

In 1900 Thomas & Jessie Reid were living in Arenac County, Michigan and had no children. According to the census Thomas Reid came to the U.S. in 1880, had been in the U.S. for 20 years and was naturalized "NA." Thomas Reid was the last name on the Bay County, Michigan, Naturalization index page at the Archives of Michigan (V12 p. 96 -1 0).

In the 1910 MI Census the Reids were living at 30 Lyman Place Detroit, Michigan. Thomas was an auto factory worker. They had been married for 24 years and had no children.

Jessie (Cameron) Reid died on 31 May 1918, and was buried in Avondale Cemetery, Flint, Michigan. She was living at 242 Lakeview, Genesee Co., Flint, MI, at time of her death.

There were two entries in the Flint Genealogical Society's Genesee Co. Death Index for Thomas Reid:

REID THOMAS M 09/18/1929 V9 210 37
REID THOMAS R. M 10/18/1920 V6 229 36

I do not know which one (if either) pertains to Thomas Reid who married Jessie Cameron.

Camerons In Antrim County, Michigan

An obituary of Isabelle (Cameron) Harsha who died April 9, 1883, in a local Traverse City, Michigan, newspaper indicated that although she was childless, she raised her brother's orphan children. I believe that brother was Alexander. Mary and William Cameron, the orphaned niece and nephew who were living with Isabelle, were born in New York; Alexander Cameron and his family were living in Utica, New York, when the 1870 census was taken.

Isabelle was survived by her husband, W. F. Harsha. Isabelle M. Cameron married William F. Harsha on May 5, 1880, in Elk Rapids, Antrim County, Michigan, according to the IGI online.

Mrs. Harsha had a sister in Duluth, two sisters in Traverse City as well as four brothers in Antrim County at the time of her death. [Sisters Agnes, Mary, Jessie and brothers James, William, John, Archibald, Alexander]

Her death record stated that she died of scarlet fever and that she was the daughter of Archie & Agnes (Liddell) Cameron.

Not My Camerons In Lapeer Co., MI

Susan Cameron died 12 December 1899 in Lapeer County, Michigan, and was buried in the Farmer's Creek Cemetery in that county. She was born in 1842 in Blenheim, Ontario, Canada, to Robert & Jane (Graham) Middleton. Her father was born in England and her mother in Ontario, Canada. The informant for her death record was Robert Cameron of Metamora, Lapeer Co., Michigan.

Hugh Cameron, son of Colin & Ann Cameron, died in Lapeer County on 1 October 1898 and is buried in Farmer's Creek Cemetery, as was his wife Susan.

A daughter of Hugh & Susan (Middleton) Cameron, Jane B. Stechow, died in Lapeer County on 4 February 1907. The informant, August Stechow, indicated that she was buried in Farmer's Creek Cemetery, as was her mother. Jane was born 10 July 1871 in Ontario, Canada.

Property owned by Mrs. Robert Cameron as listed on the Hadley Twp., Lapeer Co., Michigan, can be seen on the plat map (ca 1921) here (Section 13). In 1899 the heirs of Hugh & Susan Cameron deeded their share of Hugh & Susan's Hadley Twp. property to their brother, Robert Cameron.

Don't know why the property is listed in the name of Mrs. Robert Cameron on the plat map; Robert & Nellie (Reed) Cameron were both living in Hadley Twp. in the 1920 census with their daughter-in-law Merle (who was the widow of Nellie's son by her first marriage, Harvey Kramer). There was only one Cameron in the 1920 census in Hadley Twp., Lapeer Co., Michigan and that was Robert Cameron.

Miscellaneous Camerons In Canadian Border Crossings - Hat Tip To The Olive Tree Genealogy Blog

The tip from the Olive Tree Genealogy Blog Form 30 Border Crossings, 1919-1924, At Library & Archives of Canada, was very helpful. I followed the directions and looked for "Cameron" in the Microform Digitization here. To find what the files held for the "CAMERON" surname, I needed the "T-15264" file online and there were 5,000 cards in that file. The cards are in alphabetical order, but unindexed. An index at Ancestry.com was mentioned at the Olive Tree, but I don't have paid access.

Number 1316 indicated the start of the Cameron surname. It was an index card with no personal information included. #1317 was the first "Cameron" card with any real information.

Below is some of the information I've extracted this morning:

Was Catherine Cameron a Prettyman?

The late Mrs. Catherine Cameron, who died November 16, 1917, at Eloise Hospital, Wayne County, Michigan, was said to be buried in Marion County, Ohio. The informant on her death record* was Dr. Howell at Eloise. If her husband would have been the informant, it would have helped the research immensely. *Updated link

Catherine's parents were listed as Henry Pudeman and Mrs. Briggs. She was born March 30, 1883. Searching for Pudeman didn't locate any additional information about Catherine; was her maiden name Prettyman? There were several Prettymans in the Marion Co., Ohio, area.

It seems as though Catherine may have been Catherine (Prettyman) Cameron. I first found a death record with parents PRETTYMAN and BRIGGS in Marion County, Ohio.

Mother's name: Anna Briggs

A WorldConnect database listed a "Kate Prettyman," born ca 1882 in Marion Co., Ohio, as the daughter of Cord Hill Prettyman and Anna Briggs. A match may have been made.

Catherine was not one of "my" Camerons. However, Marion County, Ohio, is one of my areas of research since that's where Jim's Dad was born.
