John Deitz got into a shootout with law enforcement and became somewhat of a folk hero. His contention was since the Cameron Dam was on his property, the Chippewa Lumber and Boom Company (a Weyerhaeuser affiliate) should pay him a toll for the use of said dam.
Mrs. Jennie Cameron, widow of Hugh L. Cameron, of Sawyer Co., Wisconsin, was the person who sold the property with the dam to Mr. Deitz. The dam was on the borders of Thornapple Creek.
