Obituary of Archie Johnston

Archie Johnston was the son of John & Anna (Cameron) Johnston and the step-son of Donald Cameron.

Greencourt said Farewell to its oldest citizen Archie Johnston May 25th. The funeral was held in Edmonton, from the Park Memorial Chapel to Westlawn Cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his wife Grace, who predeceased him in 1967.

Archie, as everyone called him, was a pioneer homesteader in this area, arriving in 1919 after being discharged from the Canadian Army, having served four years in the trenches without injury.

He decided not to return to his old home in Michigan, so with Grace, his bride he settled on his land near Greencourt.

He farmed until 1950 when he retired to live in Greencourt. Over the next 20 years his eyesight gradually failed and he became totally blind, but he faced his disability with such courage and cheerfulness that he won the admiration of all who knew him.

Since the death of his wife, Archie batched it every summer by himself in his home, with his faithful dog company. All his friends marveled at his ability to look after himself. He always recognized his friends by their voices which he never confused or forgot.

Last August, on his 90th birthday, Archie's relatives and friends held an At Home for him during which he enjoyed visits from all his friends. He passed his last days at Mayerthorpe Hospital, where his friends visited him for the last time, and he knew them by their voices until the last.

He is survived by his only daughter, Betty, Mrs. Mervyn Goeson, of Edmondton. His son, Edward, was lost in World War II while on an aerial mission over Germany. There are two grandchildren (living) and four great-grandchildren (living).

Obituary of Margaret (Cameron) McMillan, the wife of Duncan T. McMillan, who died 2 January 1916 in Munising, Alger Co., Michigan:

DEMISE OF MRS. MCMILLAN - The death of Mrs. Margaret Cameron McMillan, wife of D.T. McMillan, occurred at an early hour last Sunday morning, January 2, 1916, at her home in Munising, Mich. Four years ago Mrs. McMillan was ill of typhoid fever and from that time she has been a great sufferer. The late Mrs. McMillan was born at Buckingham, Quebec, Canada, and was married to D.T. McMillan June 9, 1872. She has been a resident of Munising the past twenty years with the exception of one and a half years which she spent at Duluth, Minn. Mrs. McMillan has visited her daughter, Mrs. Frasier, here several times and has made many warm friends who will be sorry to hear of her demise. Although she has been a constant sufferer the past four years she never complained and was always cheerful with her family, friends and neighbors. All that medical aid and kind and loving hands could do to alleviate the suffering and prolong the life so near and dear to all was done but to no avail as the angel of death came to release the soul from the weary worn out body and give it the first breath of life which our souls draw when born anew in the morning land. Besides her husband Mrs. McMillan leaves five children, Mrs. Frasier, Waldo; Hugh of Munising; Walter, Portland, Oregon; Sam of Duluth, Minn; and Thomas of Munising. She is also survived by nine grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the house at two o'clock and 2:30 at the First Presbyterian church where she was one of the oldest members, Rev. Austin officiating. The choir sang "Shall we gather at the River" and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere: and Mrs. H. H. McMillan sang a solo, "His Will Be Done." The floral tributes were beautiful. By her family she was regarded as a faithful wife, a devoted mother and was beloved by her neighbors who knew her best. The body was laid to rest in Maple Grove cemetery.

HOLLAND'S MILLS

The angel of death has again visited our community and summoned from our midst a highly respected old lady in the person of Mrs. Thos. McMillan, formerly of Cumberland. The late Mrs. McMillan was born in Cumberland, and in the early part of her life moved to what is known as Mountain Farm, on the Lievre River. She was the first woman who visited that part of the Lievre, and her husband was the first white man that cut a tree on the farm. From there she moved back to Cumberland, where she resided up to a few months ago when she came to reside with her daughter, Mrs. George Coad, Portland. Her health began to fail and in spite of the best medical attendance and tenderest nursing she gradually became weaker and death claimed its victim Monday, Dec 7th, at 6 p.m. Deceased was of a loving, charitable disposition, and bore her suffering with true Christian fortitude. She was quite resigned to go to the home which she knew was prepared for her. The funeral took place Wednesday, December 9th, and was largely attended. In the absence of the Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Mr. Meyer officiated. The long concourse of sorrowing friends which followed the remains to their last resting place testified to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons and two daughters, to whom, with the other relatives, the sympathy of the community is extended.


Mrs. Thos. McMillan, of Cumberland, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Coad, at Portland. Deceased was in her 87th year. Mrs. McMillan was the first white woman to go up the Lievre river** as far as Tapannee farm. Her husband opened this farm, cutting the first trees with which the house was built. Three sons: Messrs. Duncan, Thomas and Alexander, of Michigan; Two daughters: Mrs. Geo. Coad, of Portland, and Mrs. Duncan Wiseman of Munising, Mich, survive her.

MR. JOHN A. CAMERON DEAD
OTTAWA, May 15 (1898-9) Mr. John A. Cameron died last evening at his residence at Stadacona Hall. Ailing for some time, a week ago he contracted a severe cold, which his weakened constitution failed to withstand, and he gradually sank till the end came. The deceased was one of the pioneers of the Ottawa Valley. He was born in Glengarry in 1821, being a son of Adjutant John Cameron, a British army officer. Coming to Ottawa when quite young, he entered in the lumber business, being connected with the W. C. Edwards Company. He was a man of the most benevolent disposition, and was an untiring worker in the interests of the charitable institutions of the city, being connected with the Protestant Hospital, Old Men's Home, Lady Stanley Institute and the Perley Home. In politics he was an independent Liberal and in religion a Baptist. A family of ten children are left to mourn the loss of a kind father, who in his lifetime won the esteem and respect of everyone with whom he came in contact. The children are: Major Geo. W. Cameron, of Montreal; John A. of Rockland; Henry _., W. A. and Russel of Ottawa; Stewart Cameron, now in the Yukon, and four daughters--Mrs. G. W. McCulloch, Mrs. H. Gerald Bate, Mrs. J.A. Garbin and Miss Cameron of Ottawa.


Ellen Audley, who may have been the source of the above obituary, was the daughter of Isabelle (Cameron) McCrea. Isabelle was the daughter of Duncan & Ellen (Cameron) Cameron. Duncan was the son of Allen & Mary (McMillan) Cameron.

The note below written by my grandmother may have been referring to the obituary above (I think it was, but take that with a large grain of salt).

Joseph & Euphemia Edmundson were in Schuyler, Colfax, Nebraska, in 1870. They were married in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI, on 5 Dec 1868. They moved to Nebraska and then to Alberta, Canada, before Euphemia moved to Wyoming with her daughter and son-in-law.

Camerons of Kitchener, Ontario

From The Buckingham [Quebec] Post, published 12 January 1973:

"Mrs. Angus Cameron and son, Dr. Donald Cameron of Kitchener, Ontario....accompanied home by Mrs. Cameron's brother, Mr. Joe McDonnell."

My Camerons lived in the Buckingham, Quebec, area, at one time, so I was happy to see that the Buckingham Post newspaper was online.

Family of Phileas A. Cameron

The Ottawa Citizen, 4 Feb 1927, published an obituary of Phileas A. Cameron, a musician who was well known in the capital city. Mr. Cameron was born in Quebec City ca 1866 and died in Montreal, Quebec. He was a son of Noah Cameron and a descendant of an officer who came to Quebec with General Wolfe.

Phileas Cameron was survived by 3 sons, Archibald N. & Ronald R. of Montreal and Gerald G. of Detroit; 4 daughters, Mrs. William Edgar Lewis of Washington, D.C., Mrs. L. R. Fournier (sp?), of Detroit, and the Misses Gwendolyn and Dorothy at home with the widow.
